My name is Alexis Herrera, and I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA. I am the first in my family to graduate from college, a milestone that reflects the values of humility, hard work, and hospitality instilled by my Hispanic upbringing. My parents have worked tirelessly as window and janitorial cleaners to provide me with a better life and the support to pursue higher education. Growing up in a Hispanic community, I witnessed firsthand the challenges many face in accessing healthcare, fueling my passion for helping those who encounter similar barriers.
I graduated from Pepperdine University and am currently a fourth-year dental student at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where I am part of the Regional Initiatives for Dental Education (RIDE) program. My academic journey has been driven by a strong desire to make my family proud through honor, service, scholarship, and leadership. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving in various community service projects and leadership roles, including Vice President of the UW Dental School, President of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA), and Representative of my RIDE cohort. These roles have not only strengthened my leadership skills but also deepened my commitment to advocacy and service.
Now, as a Spanish-speaking dental provider, I cherish the opportunity to connect with the Hispanic community on a deeper level. My goal is not only to address their dental needs but to provide comprehensive care and support. I aspire to bridge gaps in healthcare, particularly in underserved communities where access to care is most limited. Specifically, I am committed to organizing free clinics, supporting rural communities, and mentoring underserved youth by providing guidance, resources, and leadership opportunities.
This goal is not simply a professional ambition, but a calling rooted deeply in my life experiences. My journey has been shaped by the struggles and triumphs of those who came before me, and I am driven by a profound desire to give back and inspire others. With this mission in mind, I aim to expand my expertise through a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where I can continue to grow as a provider and advocate for those who need it most.
Outside of my academic and professional life, I find balance and strength in the unwavering support of my wife and our shared life outside of dentistry. Whether we’re weightlifting, playing basketball, hiking, swimming, or walking our three dogs, these moments keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of being a well-rounded provider.
I am truly honored to be chosen by the Latino Center for Health as a Student Scholar Fellowship Recipient. Their inspiration and unconditional support fuel my passion for serving my community and achieving my goals. I look forward to continuing this journey, empowered by the values and experiences that have shaped me.
